Peace of Mind is a revolutionary software product for performing comprehensive hardware diagnostics on your Macintosh. Peace of Mind provides a much more complete diagnostic test suite than competing products. With over 150 thorough tests, Peace of Mind can give your hardware a "real" workout. Peace of Mind is also ideal for testing new SIMMS. hard disks, modems, monitors or graphic cards. If you suffer from intermittent crashes and suspect a hardware related problem, Peace of Mind can help isolate the fault.
What does Peace of Mind test ?
Peace of Mind can check out memory, floppy and hard disks, monitors, graphic cards, optical disks, CD-ROMS, motherboards (including processor, FPU, MMU, sound, ROM, PRAM, and clock) keyboards, mice, Hayes compatible modems, serial ports and printers. Peace of Mind also includes a complete set of benchmark performance diagnostics that let you compare the performance of your Macintosh with the expected system.
Does Peace of Mind work on all Macintoshes ?
Peace of Mind will work on all Macintoshes with at least 2 Megabytes of memory:
A quick system test of all major components runs in less than two minutes, while individual tests may take between a few seconds to a few minutes. As there are over 150 individual tests, running a thorough test of every component on the system can take between fifteen minutes to over an hour for a loaded system.
Does Peace of Mind test the mouse ?
Yes, Peace of Mind performs three operational mouse tests, consisting of a drag test, button test and ADB communications test.
Does Peace of Mind run as an INIT ? Will it run in the background ?
No, Peace of Mind runs as an active application.
Will Peace of Mind help me with INIT/software conflicts ?
No, INIT problems are software problems. Peace of Mind focuses on hardware. Other products currently on the market (such as HELP from Teknosys, or Diagnosys from Baseline Publishing) try to find software conflict problems.
Will Peace of Mind test my SCSI hardware ?
Peace of Mind can test all fixed or removable hard drives, optical drives, CD-ROM drives and printers. It can also test some SCSI graphic cards, though scanners are not currently tested.
Can Peace of Mind help me if I can't boot my system ?
Possibly. Some sad Macintosh codes result from a failure in the hard drive subsystem, while others result from a failure on the motherboard. Peace of Mind comes with both System 6 and System 7 boot floppies that can boot the system in the event of a hard disk failure. Peace of Mind can't help you, however, if your Macintosh doesn't start due to a severe failure on the motherboard.
Can Peace of Mind be used to diagnose network problems ?
No. The current version only focuses on the individual Macintosh. Peace of Mind does a thorough test of the serial ports using an ordinary printer cable.
How is Peace of Mind different from MacEKG ?
MacEKG and Peace of Mind are different in their approach to finding problems. MacEKG looks for changes in system performances and configuration to flag potential problem areas. Peace of Mind performs active hardware diagnostic tests on machine components to find malfunctions. Also MacEKG runs as in INIT, while Peace of Mind runs as an application.
MacEKG is primarily a benchmark suite and motherboard hardware diagnostic. Peace of Mind is a complete system diagnostic that includes motherboard testing, as well as SCSI, memory, serial port, Hayes compatible modem, video, keyboard, mouse, printer, floppy and benchmark tests.
How is Peace of Mind different from Snooper ?
Peace of Mind performs detailed hardware diagnostic tests and fault analysis. Snooper's tests only verify the existence of the Macintosh's hardware components and performs minimal testing. Peace of Mind's diagnostics have been written by hardware engineers with in-depth knowledge of the operation of the Macintosh hardware. Because Peace of Mind is more thorough, it frequently detects problems Snooper fails to find.
